January What's New Collage

Asked recently to find a common value that we as Americans share, I could think of nothing other than the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness as put forth in the Declaration of Independence. The brilliance of this declaration was that it hit upon the one thing that is common to all: we want to be happy.

When the forbears of this country began this discourse it was not fully accepted among the people. There was no twitter, Facebook, television or even radio. They had to talk. It had to be first and foremost in their hearts and minds.

There was incredible risk. When one approached a neighbor, there must have been all levels of awareness of government, all levels of acceptance of status quo. Yet somehow with clear message and sheer determination, the colonies were able to unite and change the course of human history.

For those of us with a love of the earth and a concern for our children's future - that they may share an unbridled beauty, plentiful resources and a life free from servitude to corporations, banks and energy abuse - this is our time to come together.

We must, as corporate coaches are sharing with their management, step out of our "silos." We must look past our own silo of interest and issue to unite in our common pursuits: living the life we choose without harm to our neighbors; celebrating life as we choose and believe best; and most importantly assuring for our children's children a life that is full of possibility, beauty and resource that they may enjoy life's fruit as we have.

We do not have the right to deprive our children's future. We do not have the right to allow a few to destroy what belongs to us all. There are issues before us. This is our time to come together to speak as one voice, to open our eyes and our hearts and to act to protect the Earth and her children.

To this end, Echo Valley will spend 2014 bringing people together so that we can see our similarities, so that we can stand together and in fact change the course of the history that is beginning to unfold before us. It is the time of peace. It is the time of reconciliation. It is the time to protect the Earth, to change the course of destructive methods of energy extraction and use. It is time to sit in circle and listen to one another. It is time to forgive and be forgiven. We are all we have.

A conversation on creating peace, justice and sustainability in our communities

Please enjoy this radio show with A Public Affair interviewer Karma Chavez featuring Dena on Echo Valley, our need for personal peace, highlighting peacemakers and putting in a good word for community farming. Music and news is followed by the interview at

Through our scientific and technological genius, we have made of this world a neighborhood and yet we have not had the ethical commitment to make of it a brotherhood. But somehow, and in some way, we have got to do this. We must all learn to live together as brothers or we will all perish together as fools. We are tied together in the single garment of destiny, caught in an inescapable network of mutuality. And whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. For some strange reason I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. And you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be.

- Martin Luther King, Jr.
